iThings 2011 CFP

The Internet of Things (iThings) is a network of Internet-enabled objects,which aims at increasing the ubiquity of the Internet by integrating every object for interaction via embedded systems and leads to the highly distributed network of devices communicating with human beings as well as other devices. Combining with the infrastructures of the every heterogeneous networks including Internet and mobile networks, these objects can communicate with humans, and enable peoples to monitor and control them and enjoy their intelligent services in anytime and anywhere.

CPSCom 2011:The 4th IEEE International Conference on Cyber, Physical, and Social Computing

The physical things and the human society have formed into the world we live in. However, the emergence of information technologies enables a new infrastructure for a technical, economic and social revolution, which have changed the world we are used to. Cyber-physical systems couple the cyber aspects of computing and communications with the physical aspects of dynamics that must abide by the laws of physics. Social computing has become more widely known because of proliferation of online social networking in recent years. With the advent of ubiquitous sensing, future social networks will become cyber-physical, combining measured elements of the physical world. The convergence of computational and physical processes as well as human’s social behaviors exhibits a variety of complicated characteristics, which leads to a lot of challenges.

TweetControl: Control Anything with Twitter

We are ready to release a new app for the ThingSpeak Platform! The new app is called TweetControl – this app listens to Twitter for hashtags (#awesome)  and allows you to control anything that you can imagine. TweetControl is a mash up of  ”The Internet of Things” and social networking.  We were inspired by an early ioBridge project created by Matt Morey in July 2009 that used Twitter for home automation. Matt could control lights or turn on his furnace using Twitter. Now that Twitter has a Streaming API, we were able to build a scalable service to control anything in real-time via a social network.

Imagine an “Easy Button” for Twitter. All you have to is Tweet a hashtag from your Twitter account to control anything that has a web service API. The applications for TweetControl are endless, and we are excited to see what you come up with. The documentation for TweetControl is available on the ThingSpeak Community site to help you get started.

Internet of Things: how it will change the world

Try to imagine a world where everything is interconnected. A world where you can modify your own reality to see what you want to see, where your coffee machine knows when you need your next fix, and the high streets are populated with characters from your favourite PC games.

This future is not some distant dream as imagined by fans of Minority Report. Much of this technology is already here, and the current rate of development has futurists claiming that this will be a reality within the next five to ten years.

According to a recent report by Amdocs, experts are predicting that there will be seven trillion networked devices by 2017, delivering a connected life that has immediate access to data, media, communities and communications across a broad range of devices.

We have been promised this interconnected world since the 1980s, but limitations such as costs and the size and capabilities of chips and infrastructure, have kept many innovations on hold.

However, 4G and IPv6 now offer vast superhighways of space and speed, delivering what’s needed for machine to machine (M2M) communication to take place on a grand scale. Add to this the fact that Moore’s Law remains a constant, chips have become both smaller and more affordable, and that technology is developing at an unprecedented rate, and you have all the ingredients necessary for an explosion in M2M implementations across the globe.

Communication service providers are moving towards Tera-play, evolving to accommodate a complex ecosystem that’s fast and intelligent, and constantly changing to meet market demand and innovation. Tera-play providers will do more than just connect billions of people to one another – they will be a part of M2M, ensuring that communications between trillions of devices is seamless and organic.

EWSN '12: The 9th European Conference on Wireless Sensor Networks

As the field of wireless sensor networks matures, new design concepts, experimental and theoretical  findings,  and  applications have continued to emerge at a rapid pace. Being one of the leading international conferences in this area, the European  Conference  on Wireless Sensor Networks (EWSN) has played a substantial role in the dissemination of innovative  ideas  from  researchers all over the globe. For EWSN 2012, the ninth meeting in this series, we invite papers describing  original,  previously  unpublished  research  results pertaining to wireless sensor networks, broadly conceived.

Wireless Sensor Networks for Fire Extinguisher Monitoring

Adding a wireless sensor network to fire extinguishers in large facilities or on sprawling campuses allows facilities managers to continuously ensure that the extinguishers are operational, present, and unobstructed rather than relying on a manual inspection every 30 days.

The use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for life-safety applications in commercial settings is on the rise. Traditionally, wireless sensors in physical security applications are used for perimeter monitoring, intrusion detection, and mobile duress where users carry personal panic buttons around with them. Now, these technologies have been applied to fire extinguisher monitoring. Fire extinguishers are important from a safety and regulatory compliance perspective and are often subject to vandalism, pressure loss, or obstruction from view. With a properly installed WSN, fire extinguishers can be monitored on a real-time basis, contributing to lower costs and increased safety. Additionally, fire extinguisher monitoring solutions keep schools, government buildings, and private organizations’ facilities compliant with local fire codes and ready to respond to emergencies.

Wireless Monitoring

For a commercial environment there is traditionally a 30-day inspection required for each fire extinguisher. However, incidents still can occur within the 30-day period, leaving extinguishers on commercial properties vulnerable to theft, malfunction, and obstruction.

By installing a WSN to monitor each fire extinguisher on a real-time basis, the 30-day inspection becomes unnecessary because operators are provided with daily status updates and receive alarm messages if an extinguisher is removed, discharged, or becomes blocked. This provides building owners with an early warning and allows them to respond quickly when there are safety concerns. With WSNs operating in the 900 MHz spectrum in particular, the operator can expect highly stable facility coverage that will withstand heavy interference, which often is a concern when considering wireless options. A solid 900 MHz wireless system uses a repeater network to enhance the system’s range and reliability. Wireless monitoring also ensures that, during annual inspections, organizations will meet fire codes and avoid hefty fines for missing, blocked, or depressurized fire extinguishers.

For example, WSN with motion detectors can switch off unnecessary lighting if nobody is detected in the office and, easily be able to sense and report temperature for air conditioning or heating system for optimal ambient control and so as saving electric bill. WSN can also harvest vibration energy to power up the GPS and wireless network functionality for location tracking of containers or trucks. According to ABI Research, 2010 WSN IC shipment grew more than 300 percent over the previous year and it is expected to keep growing strongly with 2011 almost doubling 2010 shipment numbers. “Smart life is to keep daily life simple and intuitive. We believe the technology behind it is simple wireless connectivity with smart sensors, ” commented Charles Lee, GM of Toumaz Asia.
